What a wonderful treat to listen to. Joel Leslie is a multiple personality storyteller.
In the beginning “Bambi” (Yes. It really is his name) being a recovering addict, tries daily to make it to the next. Helping his mom in a flower shop. Smoking a joint to keep calm.
Dealing with an old bullying boyfriend who is insistent on “just one more time*.
A slow building paranormal tale, wondering who is going to be the bad ass. Who knows what will happen when you accidentally summon a god? The “paranormal” action is injected slowly, you don’t even know it’s there. From then on the paranormal dial is cranked up till everyone but poor Dan has got some. But don’t worry even Dan will not be left hanging.(again).
Quentin and Laurence struggle to work together. Quentin is always referring to himself as”one”. Laurence brings some great sarcasm to the table. Declaring being unique
“like everyone who listened to Daft Punk felt unique.”
Then there is Jack. Who is rather scary. Also who happens to be green. Every time Jack is around chaos happens to our poor Bambi. I was feeling pretty bad for him. Everyone is picking on Laurence. You start to wonder how the guy even gets out of bed in the morning. Laurence gets enough motivation knowing he will be protecting Quentin. Maybe steal a kiss or two.
One of the fun parts of the tale is poor Laurence trying to explain how to use a new cell phone to Quentin. Seeing as Quentin has never had a cell phone. The old fashioned earl is not tech savy to say the least. Does not know what Uber is. Only uses a taxi.
I had to listen to this audiobook twice. Waited a day, and listened again. The narrating that Joel does is that superb. He plays a surfer ex-boyfriend. A stiff upper lip “Lord”. Both are fantastic. Joel even does an older lady well. Sorry, That was the only one I did not care for.
Overall this audiobook felt like Joel telling us a ghost story. Sitting around the campfire with marshmallows, hanging on every word. Waiting till the very end to see how the good boys defeat the bad guy. Smores all around. A sweet romance. This should be at the top of your audiobook list. Fantastic Job Joel Leslie.
