Let me start by saying this is a good book. I quite enjoyed it. However, the beginning is rough. At least I thought so. The start makes the protagonist feel like a narcissistic prick. And not many things make any sort of sense. No character seems like they know anything, even though they are supposed to be the top players of the top guild. The protagonist seems to know very little about a world they were the top player of for so long. Throughout the book he is constantly saying he did not know about common things such as what a low level player might run into at the very start of the game. Once you get about 4 hours in though it starts getting better. From there this book feels like it is constantly getting momentum in a way that feels like the author was doing side projects and constantly improving their writing while they did this book. By the end it was a fantastic book that is having me desperately wanting more. I have to take a star off for the less than stellar start though. Jeff Hays did really good work narrating the book throughout 90% of the book. Like the author though the beginning felt poor to me. All the first voices sounded annoying and not the most intelligent and their descriptions are saying they are brilliant. Things vastly improve once the protagonist becomes a goblin though. All throughout the book though it seemed like there was little inconsistencies with characters voices. At one point a character randomly gets the sound effect used for the voices of booming gods for no reason other than he is a bit short of breath. I know it sounds like I did not enjoy the book with me pointing out these flaws, but again as it kept going the quality seemed like it was always improving. I am now definitely a fan and will be looking to get the next book as soon as it releases.
