I remember my grandfather had a pocket watch that a German soldier “gave” him. He said under the flip cover there had been a picture of a smiling young women and baby and that that was the first time he ever thought about the enemy in human terms. He never got emotional but I knew it had made an impression. He later opened up to me with his experiences in WWII through his being wounded and year long recovery. The left side of his body was a tangled mass of ripped muscle ans scar tissue. He was magnificent!! I was told many times I was the only one he ever told these stories to and I’m the better for it and hopefully my own service was better for it. This book captures the same spirit of my grandfather experiences and is time well spent for anyone with an appreciation for those who served and will certainly help establish an appreciation in those who don’t yet know.
