If you have been reading the Curvy Girl series, it would seem unbelievable that one of its peripheral characters is struggling with something. This is possibly the most accurate storytelling of a teenager struggling with domestic violence. There is excellent writing in this particular story of Carson and Callie and the fact that it is written from 2 different perspectives lent itself to entertaining and yet poignant storytelling. The only thing I would change is the way Carson’s mom seems to check out on Carson. Her apology was flimsy and I can see some real psychological trauma that Carson will have to deal with not just because of what happened with his dad but how Carson’s mom seemed to mentally check out after she separated from Carson’s dad. Of course, that is an understandable coping mechanism but it’s significant to how the American parenting culture deals with trauma.
