Entertaining characters with a protagonist that invites the reader’s empathy. A solid, if a bit standard, bildungsroman plot. And an interesting world with a coherent magic system.
The writing could use a better editor (e.g., “turbid air” shows up rather more often than is reasonable), but other than such writing tics, it’s clean and evocative.
