I was listening to Stephen Fry reading Sherlock Holmes (all 67 hours) and switched to this book for a change. I love Fry’s narration. He’s simply brilliant with all the various voices for the many characters.

And then I started this book. I was disappointed with the reader but I loved the story. The reader’s changing of characters is flawed. Their voices are harsh in some cases, unrealistic in others. I had to ignore the reading style and just enjoy the story. Thirty years ago I listened to a Books on Tape edition, and that reader was wonderful. I guess I didn’t appreciate his talent at the time.
