After listening to a number of cultivation novels in the past, I grew indifferent to the genre as many had spent an inordinate amount of ink space focusing on the minutia of the cultivation process at the expense of providing an interesting plot with a steady progression pacing. This prevented me from purchasing the series, even given that Travis Baldree is one of my top narrators. While waiting for a new interesting novel to become available, I noticed that this book had been listed in the Plus Catalog as a free offering and decided to give a listen while I waited.

I was rewarded in finding that this book not only didn’t wade in the mundane aspects of cultivation, it offered an interesting plot. While the outline of the story is not unique, the investment Tao Wong put in framing of the MC’s upbringing and overcoming hardships easily allowed me to become invested in him. I also enjoyed the naming of the fighting maneuvers during a battle and the prudent use of exposition that allowed the plot to evenly move forward.

After finishing book 1, I was immediately going to purchase book 2 only to notice that it, also was included in the Plus Catalog.
