I do not admire what Randy Lanier did, and do not agree that weed is just a “plant” (as Randy says repeatedly throughout the book), but one cannot help but be impressed with what he did. One can only wonder what he might have built if he stayed on the right side of the law. He clearly was a bit of a logistical genius. And he might have achieved a lot behind the wheel in racing.

The story moves along well, undoubtedly helped by the considerable talents of A..J. Baime. If this yarn were fiction, it would probably be ridiculed as preposterous. But it all seems to have been true, or at least mostly true. Randy may embellish here and there.

A great companion to the book is the Netflix documentary on Randy, which features Randy, Pam, and other central characters in the book.

I thought the narration was pretty good, altough Belville doesn’t sound like the real Randy. What bothered me was that he botched the names of several well known racers. Those errors could have been easily corrected. Still, he moves the story along well.
