- What did you like about this audiobook?
- I would recommend Super Sale on Superheroes by the same author (unless you must have the fantasy setting) which has a lot of the same elements.
- How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
- Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
- I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks I have 197 books in my Audible Library right now. Out of all the narrators I have listened to, Jeff Hays has to be in the top 3. I don’t know how he does it. In Super Sale on Superheroes, Arand’s latest book, Hays uses an “echo” effect for the inner thoughts of the characters. So perhaps he is using a computer program to change the pitch of the voices? In any case, it is top notch.
- Do you have any additional comments?
- Look. This book is basically fine. I Listened to it after listening to, and being blow away by Arand’s “Super Sale on Superheros”. Honestly, except for the setting, this book feels similar to his later book Super Sale on Superheroes. It almost feels like a very early draft. The protagonist has basically the same personality. There is the (basically) platonic harem of ladies who all get assigned roles.. both books even have a “lady death”. In this book, the gag food is a beetle. In Supersale the gag food is pancakes.
Supersale takes these elements and refines them and honestly, really improves on them. and really gets everything right. This book feels almost like a very first draft in which Arand figures out what works, and puts them all to good use in Super Sale. And the setting of Super Sale is really original while there is no shortage of “protagonist-gets-sucked-into-MMORPG” books.
Anyway, the book is alright, but honestly, I would recommend buying his later work.
