Slow start to this one. I couldn’t stay with it the first few attempts to listen. The author uses very descriptive writing that was poetic… almost too much so at times. Not every moment in a book needs to be poetic, but she did make the scenery come alive and you could almost taste things described. The narrator overall did a great job, but I’m thinking they could have put the project in hold until she was over her sinus infection. Her accent and voice changes were somewhat distracting between chapters. One chapter transition about 2/3 of the way in I was wondering if it was the same narrator. Also not sure if her accent was true Kentucky.

The finale was a little but unbelievable, and very rushed considering the extremely slow movement of the book. Almost everything happens in the last hour. This being said, the overall story was good and not a waste of time. However, the relationship dynamic between the main characters was quite unrealistic for 1972 in a small Kentucky town, despite me rooting for them.
