I gave this a shot after reading more recent positive reviews and I think they are wrong. I don’t know how anyone manages to make a fantasy book boring, but the main character is so bland I can’t even dislike him. There were times I thought things were about to get interesting, that maybe instead of making the predictable choice there might be a twist, but no. And then the moment that we’ve been waiting for at the end is like two sentences. It’s just awkward. The world building and back stories are really spotty, lots of implications left hanging. There are loving declarations made after three days, which, blech. My main DNFs are when books are misogynistic, racist or otherwise offensive and this book wasn’t that (unless you count abuse of the English language). It’s badly in need of an editor but that’s kind of what you get in this genre. So read it if you’re sorely in need of something ignorable to listen to while you’re working, but don’t save it for a lazy day reading treat.
