There’s an idea here that I really like but it is SO poorly executed, I caught myself rolling my eyes within the first chapter. I rarely ever write reviews but this was so egregious in its cash grabbiness, I feel compelled.
it tries so hard, grasping at cliches, using tired, exploitative tropes, that it forgets to put any effort into character development in its bid for an emotional response. Ironically, I couldn’t bring myself to give 2 shits about the main character/s. I honestly can’t even tell if there are supposed to be 2 or just one. The vibe is very xx_bl00dywrists_xx. It wants to tackle difficult topics like rape, torture, and suicide but just clumsily drops graphic scenes and refuses to elaborate.
The earnestness with which the author tries to portray their gravity, is what makes this book unredeemable to me. The author clearly lacks the skills to write at a level that handles sensitive material with the diligence and attention it requires. I have to say, it’s cringe.
From start to finish, it reads like my immortal’s ‘…and then I went to slit my rists and cry tears of blood.’ ONLY WORSE because it is devoid of any shred of self awareness. it’s edgy for edginess sake, not worth your time even if you’re into the “so bad it’s good” genre. I would pass on this one if you are considering it.
