So the author takes great pains to say the main character is trying to make his pets independent while being manipulative and abusive towards them and pretty much everyone else. I wonder if the author sees this dichotomy or is blind to it.

The main narrator is pretty good though he does get a bit over-the-top at times. I can’t imagine this book was good for his vocal cords.

The world is interesting but unrealistic at times. For example, joining the “real” Legion kills more than 1 in 5 recruits. Yet, no one outside the Legion seems to wonder where the heck the thousands of people who went to join the Legion have gotten to. The Legon’s main base, the one which we are shown anyway, is several times larger than any city in the surface world. The more the author reveals about the Legion the sillier it gets. Luckily, so far, it is a relatively small part of the books.
