“I don’t want you restrained, Nix—I want you wild and free and untamed. I want you to have everything you ever desired, and I want to watch you enjoy it . . .”

The Spy is a scorching hot mafia romance that follows the forbidden romance between opposing mafia heirs. Ares has been undercover at Kingmakers college for three years. He’s spying and plotting revenge for the bloody coup that ripped his family out of their home years earlier. He’s been patient, but when Nix Moroz arrives, his easy mask begins to slip.

Ares and Nix’s father were once friends and allies. When Moroz loses his wife to a rival mafia, he seeks the Ares’s father’s help, which he gives it. Unfortunately, Moroz wants too much vengeance. Their disagreement ruins their relationship and ignites an enmity that leads to the attack on Ares’ family, catalyzing his and Nix’s future.

Their romance is doomed before it begins. Ares isn’t really Ares. And even though Nix sees through to the heart of him, it’s not enough. She expects transparency, the exact thing Ares is unable to give her. The resulting drama is action-packed. Nix is fundamentally kind and loyal, but she is inordinately strong and vicious. She does not accept deceit with a whimper. She rages. She gets it from her father.

The Spy is the story I’ve been waiting for since I read The Heir and noted Ares’ shiftiness. Lark does not disappoint. The addition of the third point-of-view is genius. Instead of learning about the history between them second hand, we get it straight out of the gangster’s mouth. And it’s a gangster who’s story you may know already if you have read Lark’s full catalog. Either way, you’ll love it. The epilogue is especially fulfilling. It reveals the future of each Kingmaker’s couple.
