Rick R Reed’s ‘Unraveling’ richly describes an emotional journey for Randy Kay, a gay man living as straight. His internal struggle with his decision to come out is powerfully chronicled.

I’m certainly not denigrating Reed’s obvious talent, but the internal monologues of all the principal characters became a bit too cyclical and repetitive for me. This is the sort of storytelling that I avoid most often, I would say.

I was also hopeful that there would be more romantic elements. Of course, the book is not billed as a romance, and Randy and John do get together in the end for a satisfying HEA, I wanted to see more, I don’t know, hand-holding, cuddling, and wooing, I guess.

Narrator David Allen Vargo delivers a great performance. I find it amazing that a narrator who often utilizes deep voices for their characters also performs impressive female roles, as is the case with this book.
