I really enjoyed this first book of a new and original sexy paranormal series. This was a great introduction to the funny heroine and a uniquely mysterious paranormal town: Whistler’s Hollow, Kentucky. I often laughed out loud at the dialogue and inner thoughts of the hilarious heroine, Jolene. This book is entirely told from her first-person present tense perspective. Jolene is smart, sassy, and amazingly accomplished for being 33 years old. She has had 3 careers, a Ph.D. in psychology, and is fully qualified to start at the FBI as a profiler. When the FBI refuses her because she grew up in Whistler’s Hollow, she heads back there to figure out what is up with that town. I was greatly intrigued to learn along with Jolene about the subtle and not so subtle oddness of this town.

The author is marvelous at world-building and describing the place so well that I felt like I was there. The colorful cast of characters, including the Jolene’s new cats, really made the story lively. The author certainly seems to know about living in the South, which I as a Southerner appreciate. I am hooked on the story and the mystery, and I can’t wait for the next book. The heroine uses the F-word fairly often, not too much for me, but I watch a lot of rated R movies. The love scenes are pretty graphic and steamy. Fans of Molly Harper and fans of sexy urban fantasy will probably enjoy this book.

I feel that prospective readers will want to know that while there are a few sexy encounters in this novella, it doesn’t feel like any relationship has been started. I predict that this series either is a “why choose/free love” story or some sort of polyamorous or reverse harem thing going on. It’s hard to tell, but it’s unlikely to be a monogamous male/female romance. The whole novella was so entertaining that I can forgive the ambiguity about the romance element.

The narrator, Maggie Indara, delivers an expert performance that really elevates the entertainment level. She is very accomplished with all of the southern accents from Kentucky as well as an Irish accent. Maggie Indara really impressed me with her narration skills, and I will definitely look up her other work.
