I got this book as a gift. I read a lot of Sci-Fi/ fantasy novels, am an MTG Judge, and DM a weekly game of 5E, so I’ve got ‘nerd cred’, but this book is just cringe. Note: i’m 3 chapters in and will probably stop listening after finishing this review.
The narrators performance is like Kronk from Emperors new Groove trying to talk like Duke Nukem. I think it’s in keeping with the character as written…but…i can’t deal with it for a full 13 hours
The “plot” setup, I guess, is trying to be a cross of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy sudden world ending peril, and Ready Player One’s dungeon crawling nostalgia-fest… but they kinda toss this situation at you before you’ve had any time to care about the characters or the world, unless you are one of those people that automatically like anything with a cat in it. There are big stakes, but nothing to make you care about them.
