I’m not sure if I’m just getting burned out on this genre, but Demons do it Better was just middle ground good in my opinion. I think I might be getting a little tired of Joel Leslie’s narration style, but he’s generally so good I don’t want to complain. The multi species and human world is a fun fantasy, but I just found some of the characters predictable and boring. I did like Percy, “the Lucifer” and the story about how human’s and their religions have misunderstood Lucifer’s and God’s purpose. There were some humorous moments, like when Sam was leaving the Hellhound’s and moving to an admin position with the Lucifer’s, and all the hounds were crying and howling that Sam was “their human and the Lucifer’s should just go find their own human”. And the new Hellhound admin is an intimidating shifter with a reputation of not putting up with shenanigans. She won’t be nearly as fun as Sam was. There was some amusing banter between the characters through some of the story. The genetic manipulation of human and species DNA was a good interest scaffold for the story, and set the audience up for further nefarious attempts at changing the human/species ratio on Earth in the next book or books. I already purchased the second book when it was on sale but am going to wait awhile before listening because I don’t want my middling assessment of Demons Do it Better to color my experience.
