Journey: Sunfall is a more realistic view on how things would play out if the power switched off one day with no hope of it returning for years. This was a really fun story to listen to. There are no multi-million dollar shelters or marauders looting and armed to the teeth on day one. The author did a great job in showing the gradual descent that civilisation would take as days go by without delivery shipments, CNN or phone reception.
This book would be aimed at older teens as there is some language. I personally don’t like a lot of language but she tries to add that realism, and everyone has different tolerances.
This story is told in two different perspectives. Ripley and her gang, and Grams at home where Ripley and the gang are trying to get to. I personally became more interested in Grams’ story as time went on because of her humour and could see things happening on the town. Ripley and the Gang just seem to take forever in getting places. This novel is definitely a slow burn, but fits since its trying to be realistic to people so it a big build up. That being said at being over ten hours long, there’s a lot of build with promises of pay off in book two. I can understand why she did it but when I hit that it was an immediate black mark. There should be at least a small amount of payoff for a satisfying ending to a book rather than a tune in to the next instalment. The last criticism I have is this author has no qualms about striking barbs at white males so I have no qualms in saying some of them seemed forced.
I liked the dual narration of Kevin Pierce and Becket Royce as it helped keep the events happening in two different places organised. Both did a great job with each of the characters that were in their settings.
I would definitely recommend this book as it is a fun realistic view of what things could be like, and could almost be taken as a preppers manual told in narrative because there are lots of tips and tricks that would be helpful to try. My only question is when does part two become available on audible.
