In an audiobook there are 2 parts, the Writing of the book, and the production quality/performance of the Audio. in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of books, I’ve found the gold standard for what a LitRPG ought to be. No one note personalities. Genuine struggles and problem solving between clashing groups and inviduals with believable goals. All in a creative and consistent world, wonderfully crafted with every detail purpose made to add something. As for the performance, Jeff Hayes and Soundbooth Theatre don’t know how to fail at being their A game. Every word, every character, every sound is expertly placed to express emotion and immerse the listener. There have been many times where I’ve chosen to sit and listen to this book with my mostly undivided attention rather play a video game or watch a show. It is simply that compelling. And as a tool to fill the space when doing chores or cooking it may be one of the greatest gifts I’ve been given to enrich those times so magnificently. I cannot recommend this series enough. If you like the idea of following the harrowing and often times tragically silly story of a man driven to survive an alien death game in the style of a combat heavy RPG, with trauma and internal struggles rivaling external struggles, then PLEASE purchase this book, you won’t regret it. Though you should start with the first one and work your way up. With consistent mystery, action, political webs, RPG systems, and lead up and climax writing that’s sure to get you excited for how things play out, these books captivate, demanding your attention and not letting go. 5/5 stars.
