The writing wasn’t my favorite. I’ve listened to one other audiobook by the same author and enjoyed the writing a lot more so I do have my suspicions that they’ve made an intentional choice and kept the theme throughout the book (but hopefully the whole series isn’t like this).
There’s this repetition thing the author does ‘he said, he said, I said’ is super common but there’s a lot of examples in which repetition is used for emphasis. That’s a normal tactic and I wouldn’t mind it if it didn’t go on SO LONG. Maybe it would have been better looking at it on a page or maybe the narrator could’ve made it better, either way it got old. By the end I was thinking ‘this is what, a 12 hour book? I bet if the author was more concise it would’ve been 8. The word count on this thing has to be insane.’
Anyway, I like the characters. I like the story, though I wish there was more time spent between the love interests being all romantic and such. Overall, I’m looking forward to
The next book in the series and fingers crossed the author tones down the use of word repetition or I won’t be able to finish the series. It’s that annoying. But the characters and story are engaging enough that I’ll give it one more chance. I KNOW TJ Klune can write better than this, so wish me luck!
Side note: the other book I listened to by TJ Klune was How to be a Normal Person and I LOVED it!
