I was in a book slump. Nothing in romance was holding my interest so I went back to my first love, mystery/thriller. I prefer audiobooks and this one was on audio so I was set. I was not prepared for this masterpiece. This book scared the bejesus out of me from the beginning, always a good sign. As the plot unfolded and I met the characters I fell in love. I want strong smart women characters and Tess Winett is whip smart and fiercely dedicated to her work. Laura Watson is brilliant but broken by the past. Both these female characters are determined to fulfill their life goals.
Enter, him. The killer tells his portion of the tale in memoir fashion and it is chilling. To hear how he developed into the man and monster he has become is the frightening part. This style sets him apart as an integral observer. I did not guess the identity of the killer till the reveal, the mark of a well crafted thriller.
I listened to this book on audiobook and the narration, by Andrew Tell, is outstanding. His interpretation, giving voice to the psychopaths, is terrifying. I am searching out more work by this author and this narrator. I am gonna binge listen to both this weekend.
