So I would say this story is pretty slow moving there really is no “villain” yet in the story it is just the Magus choosing one day to depart and create a wizard’s tower to carry out his research and live unbeholden to others.

I really like the main character. I am a sucker for powerful competent protagonists who make the morally good and also ingenious tactical decisions. I also find his grumpy skeptic opinion of the world to be funny. Only thing I do not like about the main character is he is half-elf which comes with a bit of racial superiority and looking down upon the humans.

As for things I did not like the voice acting and words of nobility are all very caricatured. It seems ever noble has the temperament of a gaudy exaggerated Marie Antoinette; they are uniformly shallow and driven by greed and power.

I think there are definitely many seeds planted in this book for future stories. I am a little afraid that the author doesn’t have a plan and will not be able to close the ties. This could end up being a long series so I hope the author has the fortitude to carry it out.
