This is the first book in the series. I am very happy to read about John Pickett’s beginning life at age 14. I have listened to the books out of order and each one stands alone. In this story, magistrate, Mr. Colquhoun sets up street urchin, John Pickett, in an apprenticeship to a coal merchant in exchange for room and board. John’s future outlook improves when the magistrate later discovers that Pickett has quite the knack for solving crimes.

This is a great mystery series, and you will want to read all the books! The narration in each book is absolutely fabulous and sounds like a full cast production. I was gifted a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for an honest review.
