This book, the stories within this book, are almost incomprehensible. That anyone actually lived, existed, in the way these people did is impossible for the average person to understand. The stories are heartbreaking, shattering, never uplifting. But how could they be? Ask for freedom, get it and decide it wasn’t worth it after all. So many suicides, arrests, murder, death, always death. It wasn’t an easy book to listen to but it was amazing. Not for the faint of heart. Would I recommend it? Yes. It is wonderfully written and translated, and the narration is excellent by everyone, but prepare yourself before listening because doing so is painful.
