This was a pretty well written book. I was surprised because I expected the usual story with the usual characters. In some respects, it was predictable, but it definitely went beyond the boundary of “run-of-the-mill” mindless pablum. The characters are developed, the world they inhabit easily visualized, and the dialogue is mostly natural, although there are a few cringey lines.

The ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger. Really, it feels more like the transition from the first to second half of a novel than it does an ending. The first book is free with membership but the following requires a credit. I guess I’ll be using one to find out what happens next.

At first, I didn’t much care for the narrator, but she definitely warmed to the story and became much better at telling it. Her southern drawl combined with quaint southern phrasing is believable and comforting, like warm banana pudding with ‘Nilla wafers. Goes down easy.
