This is a rare 5 star rating for me. I truly just loved this book. It’s the story of a young woman, Emi, who is working as a set designer for a play and is going through a break up while continuing to work with her ex-girlfriend. Emi and her best friend, Charlotte, find a letter in an estate sale from an old Hollywood movie mogul and set out to deliver the letter to his next of kin. Then enters Ava a down and out aspiring -but out of work actress who has been treated unkindly by her adoptive mother. But the real themes in this book are so much bigger- so much more intimate and intricate and so delicately woven that you will find tears in your eyes for no reason while you read. I loved the friendship between Emi and Charlotte. I also found the old Hollywood setting so dazzling and fun. The little mystery woven into the plot with the letter was brilliant and keeps you listening to find out who and why. But ultimately, it’s the endearing Emi and the relationship that blooms with Ava with such poetic subtlety that you find yourself holding your breath at the end to see if it just might work…This really is just a heartwarming read. I can’t say enough good things about it. You don’t have to be young or gay to appreciate the kindness and compassion and optimism of Emi’s heart.
