I like apocalyptic fiction but have noticed that, as a reader, you usually have to deal with poorly written stories and characters. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the slow burn series seems to buck the trend.

The Author does a better than average job writing characters with emotional depth without falling prey to the normal hamfisted approach you find across the genre. It is also clear that the author made the effort to do more research than most. There are a few holes that are obviously for the sake of the narrative but we’ll within my tolerance.

One minor nitpick I have is that the virus reportedly burns out higher brain function with a fever but no one ever suggests trying to bring people’s temp down with an ice bath or just plain water. Seemed kind of obvious to me.
