It was a decent sci fi story for entertainment while I cooked / cleaned / did monotonous chores. None of the ideas were especially original though and I can’t say there were any serious surprises in the book. I also was a bit disappointed by two specific aspects of the writing. First, Captain Matics is described early on as someone especially quick witted. Yet there are a few instances in the book where the reader / listener grasps what’s going on moderately ahead of Captain Matics which makes his character feel less realistic. The second disappointment I had was that too frequently the timing of events worked out perfectly with barely any time to spare (e.g. Matics saving Riker, who had been on Loki for days or weeks, with mere seconds to spare). Even in a science fiction universe, such repeated fortunate timing is very unlikely and repeatedly generates skepticism in the reader and makes the story less enjoyable.
