The basic story started out good, but then turned into a disappointing mess. The earth was hit by some comet fragments & some of the people that survive wake up with special powers. Great! Right? No! Dust, The (supposed hero) turns into a non hero. At every confrontation he gives great commentary on the action but very little action from him. His friend/girlfriend? ,Sammy, (whatever) gets beaten, locked up & threatened with a later good ole boy raping & what does THIS hero do, he sends her off later with the man who beat, locked her up & threatened her with rape. Really. I guess short term memory loss was one of the special powers. The bigoted humans, the devil dogs (one that turned kinda human),killer bugs & the ineffectual heroes, ineffectual because unlike the bad guys, the heroes need food ALL THE TIME & they never finish the job. The bad guys are NOT a brain trust (the four guys in FOUR TRUCKS looking for gas comes to mind. The only person here that seems to have a functioning brain is Josie. She realizes that they should learn to use their new powers & that the enemy is the enemy, not your new possible friend. The bow & arrow against guns bit was ridiculous (just ask the Native Americans). The love story was sick the devil dog (She Devil) wants to kill 16 year old Sammy because 15 year old Dust cares about her. In other words the dog is jealous of the girl, LOL. After all the bull in this book it ended with werewolves & vampires. The author couldn’t come up with any better evolution from a comet strike than WEREWOLVES & VAMPIRES. I hope Josie finds a marshmallow factory and fries them all. This was a real waste of a good comet strike.
