I got here after listening to Dusty’s Diary. I saw “55 hours for one credit” and jumped on it. Very, very glad I did. I’m only up to Book 5 and I had to come here to write my review. This book set is amazingly good. I really like the new twist on the “zombie” idea. The characters are well written. They’re ordinary people (The main character was a Starbucks barista before the plague hit) His past has shaped him and he learns to grow through adversity. Not just from who he was but also who he became after the pandemic. But it’s not mushy crap. I seriously can’t with mushy. Just no. There’s some humor too. I really enjoy the dialogue which can be a real challenge with some writers. The characters are diverse and relatable. I’m trying to leave out specifics to avoid spoilers. I was surprised, pleasantly so that only a couple of weeks have passed since the pandemic crashed civilization.

This is my first time listening to Phil Thron and he’s easy on the ear. I immediately got into the book because I forgot I was being narrated to. I always think that’s the sign of a good narrator … when I become completely immersed in the novel. He has a good range of voices to differentiate between characters. His voice changes for women is good, no high pitch falsetto or whiney-ness. My favorite is that there are no stereotypical voices for specific nationalities.

So far, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian adventure novels.
