I mean I really hate sound effects in audio books. I actively redirect people interested in one like that to a better book. But this one is different. For the most part they are good at volume control, which is always too loud. They keep the high pitches down and they don’t seem to overlap with the tone of the narrators, which can just wash everything out.

Somehow they got this one 95% right. And it works because a huge story element is about music. I’ve given only one god review of a book with sound effects and that one was also about music and magic.

But to everyone else stop! Please please please stop using sound effects. Practice if you wish. Release two versions. But please allow me to enjoy the words without ear splitting creaking and trying to blast out my speakers or ears. And remember to test it on every sound system from the cheapest earbuds to the most high end sound system test then all please.
