I’m conflicted on this one. The worldbuilding and character development are great for the most part. The trouble is that one of the main characters constantly makes borderline nonsensical decisions. This normally isn’t a problem since this gives room for character growth. However, we never really get that payoff until the last 1/5th of the book. For that first 4/5th, the MC is just an utter pain to read through. She’s constantly abused and kicked down. I understood why the author did so, but it made for a very difficult read. By the end, I felt it was worth getting through – but just barely. The resolution was fulfilling and epic, which just goes to show how tedious that initial buildup was.
