I am a true crime fan anyway, but this book was more than just a presentation of the facts of murders. It tells the story from the point of view of Dee, the woman on the cover. The reader gets inside her life—her brain, experiencing all of her self-talk as she is “played” by those whom she trusted & loved. It is a case study of a life that could have been heroic but for one or two moments that steered her in a completely different direction. Although my frustration with the idiocy of her decisions all along was almost palpable and I wanted to stop listening a few times, I could not. I was hooked. I loved Dee and wanted to see it through to the end. It’s not an easy task for an author to portray a multi murderer as a protagonist, but that is what is necessary in this case. And Provost pulled it off brilliantly. I thought the subtitle “murder under the influence” was odd, but now I realize it is right as rain. Well-done! And Kevin Pierce’s interpretation of the characters was instructive and fascinating. I might listen to this book again!
