I am really enjoying this series and especially like that we see Wu Ying grow as a person, as well as a cultivator. When the first book starts, he is 16 and a few years have passed now. He is focused on his cultivation, his supporting job, his inner personal relationships and a small amount of politics. This helps broaden his horizons, as he must deal with a noble and a general and starts to see how their views of the world differ from his, with his upbringing as a peasant.

The detail is really good, but not overwhelming and Mr. Wong adjusts the amount for the situation, which I feel helped set the pacing nicely.

I also like that he spends time in the sect, then goes on long journeys every so often. This provides a nice balance to his activities, aids in his growth, and keeps the story interesting.
