Great world building (perhaps too much), but I had a hard time staying invested in the story and would stop listening for days at a time. Perhaps that’s because virtually every character has a twisted backstory and will give you an exposition dump at some point to tell you about it. Normally I like a complicated story, and I guess I still do here, but it’s done to the detriment of establishing the emotional hooks needed for me to care. Ultimately this feels too much like an intellectual exercise.
With that said, it is not a bad story and often feels like it could be great. I’m glad I listened to it and will continue the series, but there is little chance I’ll come back.
