I selected this book on a whim as a light story for listening while I was attending to other tasks. So, I was greatly surprised to discover this to be a truly engaging science fiction tale and unconventional love story. Overall, the book has the tone of a romantic comedy, but set within the framework of a police procedural sci-fi story with some truly disturbing moments of horror. It’s quite laudable for the writer to have accomplished that so successfully. Add to that the excellent performance of the narrator, who is able to breath such vibrance and humanity into the two main characters, that they fully spring to life. The playful banter between the two main characters as their relationship develops leads to some truly laugh-out-loud moments. Rather than an overly sanguine pulpy male couple romance, the unfolding of the characters’ developing love for each other feels far more natural and organic. In all aspects, the novel feels fully successful as a both a gripping sci-fi horror tale and as a fresh and engaging love story.
