I just finished the audiobook of death rites by E. A. Copen and I loved every second of it! It was my first exposure to the urban fantasy genre as well as one of my first murder mystery books. E. A. Copen’s writing style has a perfect balance between detailed description and action that really keep the book moving while still enveloping me in the world. Their descriptions of New Orleans sounded well researched and really helped to ground the story in an alternate reality and if I didn’t know better, I would fully believe the author has walked and lived the streets of that city because it seems like they knew their way around. The main character has a hysterically dry sense of humor that had me bursting out laughing as I listened on my hour commutes from work and the narrator had an impressive range of voices that really helped bring each of the characters alive. The main character definitely has a penchant for getting himself in over his head (which certainly kept things interesting) and I spent every chapter wondering how on earth he was going to survive to the end of the book, despite knowing there are upwards of twelve more books in the series! All in all, a delightful adventure and I can’t wait to listen to the second book of the series!
