I’m about two hours away from finishing this book and finally giving up on finishing it. Within the first few minutes of listening to this book, I quickly decided that I deeply disliked the way that the author had chosen to write this story. Normally I read/listen to authors that have a more… artistic style, and this reads like someone stuffing plot in between sex scene after sex scene. I choose to try and finish Nox only because the summary and reviews interested me, but I think it was a mistake. So many things were wrong and gross about this book from a moral standpoint that I’m surprised I made it as far as I did, but for all its faults, Nox does have a very original idea. The only other nice thing that I can say is that the sex scenes are quite polished, but that compliment should fade once you understand the dynamics between the characters. Okay, so to start with what upset me from a writer’s perspective: the POV changes between Luca, Nox, and Dr. Reese, sometimes in the third or first person. It’s odd, and I think the story would have been more enjoyable from just Luca’s or Nox’s POV. The second chapter was beyond painful because the reader is supposed to become emotionally connected to Dr. Reese, but it’s poorly written and his character is so inconsequential that I can’t imagine what he could be needed for as far as plot goes. Also, his portions of the story are supposed to be full of logical military types, but it’s nails-against-chalkboard bad characterizations and not how the military operates. After that issue, we’re left with all the sex scenes. The quickest way to explain it is to tell you to imagine the Twilight main characters, but no stops. There are very rape-y overtones by the “werewolf” character Nox, a carnal need to fuck Luca “until he passes out”, and makes him unable to “make love”. Whatever causes this fuckery also makes Luca 100% okay with this, but then he also tries to get butt fucked without lube so obviously his vote amounts to peanuts. Not to mention the age difference between the characters, virgin vs not conversation, forcing your protection on someone who doesn’t want it, and so much more. My favorite is that Nox has been having sex with Luca’s brother in kinky underground orgies for the last few years, but then Nox kills Luca’s brother and latches onto Luca as his new sex toy. But if that doesn’t detour you, the horrible ” what if he doesn’t like me??!??!” shit should, especially when the idiots can literally feel or smell what each other are feeling. I’m beyond pissed that the author choose to write their characters this way, as it allows readers to think that these ideas are normal or common. If someone wants to treat you the way Nox does, run. This is packaged as romance, but it should be a horror story.
