I must admit to giving this audiobook 5 stars due in part to the fact that at the time of this review the overall rating is under 4.5 stars. I’m normally fairly stingy with my 5 star ratings, because otherwise the rating system is meaningless. And yeah, I get that I’m basically fighting the ocean tides in trying to have Audible’s nonsensical 5 point system retain any real meaning. Everyone else seems to give 5 stars to a book just because they managed to listen to it all the way to the end, or giving a book 1 star because they didn’t like the MC. Ok, griping aside, this is actually a really compelling and singular story. Eden Hudson has managed to take a very interesting and somewhat unique approach to setting up her MC in a cultivation universe. Not only that but the characters are easy to connect with and in spite of their flaws you can’t help but root for them. On top of that she has done a fantastic job of marrying together the varying genres of Space Western, Cultivation, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and more. The narration is every bit as good as all of Travis Baldree’s performances, and the universe and world are fully conceived and easy to immerse yourself in. The only complaint I have is that this audiobook, while not necessarily short, felt like it should probably have been another few hours longer… Hence my guilty justification for my 5 star rating. Normally if I give a book 5 stars, it means that it has exceeded all my expectations and desires. So in the end, what I’m trying to say is that if you are into the genres I listed above and are looking for a solid audiobook then this one is definitely worth your credit. I wish I had been able to read a considered review of this book the first time I came across it so I wouldn’t have been put off by its undeserved low rating. Eden Hudson is a talented author and she deserves a better appreciation of her work then the overall rating implies.
