I may have enjoyed this story if it was my first RPG book. Now, I just expect more. This book doesn’t know what it wants to be. The protagonist is a weak boy that has aspirations of being a musician. The singing and instrument playing is annoying, distracting and makes no sense to the story. He gets a code for a game, but he’s not a gamer. Miraculously he understands the intricacies of game battle and apparently intuitively understands and utilizes the abilities of his team. As a lifelong gamer, I just have to roll my eyes. One of the most exhausting elements is that his bossy, would be girlfriend can’t see or hear two of the main characters, so the protagonist is constantly repeating to her what was just done and said. It’s worth a listen if the book was free and, like me, you go through them like candy. The narration was great, as Jeff Hays is in LifeReset. If you want an excellent RPG book, instead listen to The Land by Aleron Kong.
