The idea that forgiveness comes from the acceptance of Jesus providing justification and the journey just beginning. It is through time with the Son that one gets to know the father , as he received greater mercey, knowledge of the Holy one, he is more likely to do his will. As this process continues he is emptied of himself allowing Christ to live freely within. When life on earth ends, it is just the beginning of the eternal life of either damnation, pergatory, or the presence of God. Pergatory being a continuation of the santification process.
