I was not ready for this book. The intro did not properly prepare me at all. The first part of the book was hard to get through, its definitely dark. But then, holy crap! I was sucked in, and disturbed, and turned on, and other warring emotions. Maybe its just the first book of this type I’ve ever read, but throughout the whole thing I went from enjoying it to feeling like I shouldn’t enjoy it (but still did). I really liked both narrators too, the dual narrative really helped the story in audio form. I think I might have enjoyed this story much less had I read it in hard copy.
The interdialog of the two main characters is so in depth and speaks on issues of morality that it adds another dimension to the story. The whole book takes place in the span of a week, to give an example of the level of detail provided. Even the world building if you can call it that since it’s based in our modern world.
It’s the first time I read this author and I while I enjoyed the story it is definitely not for everyone. The story starts out with human trafficking and then to the girl’s new life. I’m still torn on alot of this, but the story is so far redeeming itself quite a bit. And that ending! Not fair. Thank God book 2 was already out so I could immediately get it and continue on. And even though this is a review for the first book, I already finished the second one too…and it keeps getting better.
