This series came to my attention because the author’s next series, set in the same universe, showed up in an audible sale. It sounded like it could be a refreshing change, but I put off buying that one because this previous series seemed to have some good word of mouth going on.
I was aware that it was written from the point of view of a merchant spacer rather than the usual navy captain, but, as the title says, wow.
I was immediately pulled in to the story by being able to empathize with the character and believe that in his situation I might have made similar choices. That put me immediately on his side, because I’m always right.
Such a refreshing story. His successes don’t change the world, but they are very meaningful for the character and those around him. The stakes don’t seem any less important for the lack of combat.
In my own life I’ve found myself stranded in a strange city, the industry I was working in collapsing, and wondering what I was going to do to put food in my mouth and have a roof over my head. With that experience in mind, each success flooded me with the same relief the character must have felt.
Yes, yes and yes again. I can’t wait to continue this series.
