If you enjoyed J.S. Morin’s “Galaxy Outlaws” (yes, the 86 hour audiobook!) and you liked the character of Esper, then you’ll really like this set of stories. After the resolution of Carl Ramsey and his crew, Esper has set off on her own as a sort of good samaritan vigilante. Accompanied by the sentient canid Kubu, she goes around helping people for not much money. And eventually she catches the eye of the magical Convocation, who want to bring her in.
Esper quickly became my favorite character in “Galaxy Outlaws.” She’s a former elementary school math teacher and ordained sister of the OneChurch, but she’s also incredibly pretty due to all kinds of cosmetic surgery that her mother foisted on her. Oh, and she becomes a powerful wizard by spending the equivalent of decades apprenticing in the mind of the feared Mordecai the Brown (time passes very slowly in this mental communion). She’s got a strong moral compass and can be a little preachy. But I find her endearing!
Now, the narrator of this series, Mikael Naramone, is hands down the BEST audiobook narrator I’ve ever listened to. He can create so many different voices consistently that it really is like listening to one of those multi-cast audio productions!
