Our favorite necromancer returns! Sadly, I feel like my time was wasted.

The Bad:

I just finished and the closest feelings I can relate this too is Season 8 of Game of Thrones…disappointing. If you like stories that end on a high note, I am not certain you will find it here. Let me explain it this way: Imagine Odysseus going through the full story of the Odyssey only to end up back at Troy. Sure there’s a story, along with some interesting set pieces, but ultimately nothing Jason does matters while simultaneously being the only character to really suffer consequences in any meaningful way. In lieu of character development, characters just repeat themselves over and over, rehashing points that had already been explained over and over. The plot doesn’t really move forward in any substantive way from the previous book and what does get “resolved” does so in frustrating ways. My only hope is that the author has a plan and is setting Original Sin up for some actual gains in the next book. It was all I could do to plod through to the end. To be honest, the book feels like it ends 2-3 hours before it really does, and those last few hours would have been better spent as the beginning of the NEXT book. At the moment however, I’m not sure if I’ll be motivated to find out.

The Good: new powers and abilities, some epic (if lengthy) fight scenes, expands the world a bit with some new villains, finally some “city-crafting”, a couple Star Wars references, and probably the narrators best performance so far (not a high bar btw). Despite the fact that I didn’t like this one, I still think the IP is cool and I am hopeful that the next main book in the series will leave me feeling happier with my investment than this one did.
