This book is pure Charles Phipps. He does what he does best here with snarky characters, twisty plots, and great action sequences. The thing about this specific story is that it’s like hereditary CIA with magic and creatures. If you’re already a fan, it shouldn’t take much convincing. This is a fun twist of concepts he’s already using in his Agent G series and Supervillainy series, but with its own flavor.

One thing I like about the various Phipps stories I have read is that the characters themselves are complicated and have many identities. He has room in his worlds to write characters who aren’t cishet, and I love that it’s always there.

Narrator Jeffrey Kafer brings his usual flair. He is the usual voice of Phipps and does it so well. He can make a smartass character endearing instead of a strait up jerk.

Fun, and recommended for those who like urban fantasy from a voice continually bringing fresh ideas.
