I’ve had great fun revisiting the Mixed Messages series with each audio release, and Risk Taker was certainly no exception. I tend to gravitate toward friends-to-lovers romances in general, but this story is especially memorable. The obvious connection and clear, simmering chemistry between Ivo and Henry set the story apart from others in the trope. Add in this author’s smooth writing style, quick-witted dialogue, and upbeat pace and this is an easy recommendation made all the better by the narrator’s bright delivery that infused the scenes with emotion, humor, and palpable unresolved sexual tension.

The first time I read Risk Taker I remember finding the hot and cold routine between Henry and Ivo frustrating after a while, so much so that I wasn’t always rooting for the men as a couple despite liking them and the story quite a bit. However, I honestly think Mr Leslie’s narration added so much to the scenes and characters’ development that it didn’t feel as tiring this time. Instead, I was focused on how clearly the love and respect these men had for one another came through to the listener. Well, that plus smiling or laughing out loud over the barbs, snark, and generally funny exchanges contained in the story. Without a doubt, this is one book and couple that gets better each time you encounter them and which is further elevated by a talented narrator. If you are in the mood for some laughs, a whopping case of UST, and a sweet story of long time best friends to lovers romance, Risk Taker is worth the listen.
