I can kind of understand the idea to explore LGTBQ topics in the narrative considering the topic of harem style marriage practices are discussed. That being said, it took a large chunk of the narrative to introduce a very over the top character. Normally readers might overlook time spent on character indulgences like this, but as it wasn’t your typical archetype it didn’t provide the fan service most would likely enjoy.

All of that being said I don’t think the author or the series is terrible as a result (far from it), and the hate given in some reviews is a bit much.
