Magic comes from the gods but the gods have long since let this world. The Tstar rules the three kingdoms with an iron fist, only allowing magickers if they obey the Tsar all others are hunted down by the Tsars Stalkers. In a struggle for their lives Alana and her brother must find a way out of the city to somewhere where they can be safe.
The story is one that has been told before with some tweeks but in general this is a struggle against tyranny in whatever form it may come in. Aaron Hodges does a good job at humanizing the main characters and none of them are perfect or even strive to be perfect. You will not find anything truly new in this trilogy but if you have some time it is an enjoyable tale told by a competent author and narrated by David Stifel (Awaken Online series) who does a good job throughout.
